Description:This atlas covers the Smicksburg 15-minute quadrangle in Indiana, Jefferson, and Armstrong Counties. It consists of a book and 11 plates. The plates are 1:62,500-scale topographic, geologic, and mineral resource and structure maps; subsurface structure maps; stratigraphic sections; sections from gas well records; and a diagram showing the lenticular nature of gas sands. The report has detailed descriptions of the geologic units: Conemaugh Group and Allegheny Group to the formation and bed level; Pottsville Series (Homewood Sandstone, Mercer Member, Connoquenessing Sandstone); and Burgoon Sandstone. There is a complete assessment of the geologic structure of the area. The mineral resources are described in great detail, especially coal and natural gas. The history of extraction of both of these resources is presented, along with descriptions of individual coals, mining districts, and drillers “sands.” Coal analyses, a discussion of coal reserves, and a number of gas well logs are included. Other resources discussed briefly are sand and gravel, sandstone, and iron ore. More complete discussions of clay and shale, limestone (Upper Freeport and Vanport, including analyses), and water resources are presented.
