Description
In 2016, the Pennsylvania Geological Survey’s park guide series was recategorized and included in a new trail of geology series. The author of TG 16–016.0, a reformatted version of Park Guide 16, tells the story of how the rocks and rivers have shaped the landscape at Swatara State Park in southeastern Pennsylvania. It is a tale of geological processes and strange creatures that moved through the Ordovician and Devonian seas hundreds of millions of years ago. The guide includes a geologic map and sketches of common fossils that have been found in the area. Two fossil sites are mentioned in TG 16–016.0, but the information is out of date. The Swatara Gap fossil site became unsafe and was closed in 1990, and the Suedberg fossil site has been extensively picked over.
