Description
In 2016, the Pennsylvania Geological Survey’s park guide series was recategorized and included in a new trail of geology series. TG 16–015.0, a reformatted version of Park Guide 15, gives an introduction to the geology of two state parks with similar geology that share a history of producing iron from local ores. Pine Grove Furnace State Park is approximately 13 miles northeast of Caledonia State Park in south-central Pennsylvania. Both parks are located along South Mountain. The metamorphosed volcanic rocks and overlying sedimentary rocks of South Mountain are significant in the local history of the region. The guide includes a geologic map of each park area, schematic cross sections illustrating the geologic history of the region, and photographs.
