Description:This illustrated report contains detailed discussions of the topography, stratigraphy, structural geology, and mineral resources of a 15-minute quadrangle containing Pennsylvanian and Mississippian bedrock in the Appalachian Plateaus province of western Pennsylvania, mostly in Jefferson County. The mineral resources include extensive coal deposits and natural gas, as well as high-calcium Vanport Limestone, other limestones, sand and gravel, sandstone, clay and shale, and low-grade iron deposits. Water resources are also discussed. The report includes separate 1:62,500-scale maps showing topography, bedrock geology, mineral-resource data (coal beds, mines, and outcrops; clay mines and outcrops; and structure contours on the Vanport Limestone), and natural-gas data (structure contours drawn on top of the red beds of the Catskill Formation, and gas pools and wells).
