Description: | This detailed report about the geology and potential of coalbed methane sources in the northern Appalachian coal basin is a reprint of Topical Report GRI-95/0221, which was published by the Gas Research Institute in 1995. It starts with a summary of previous studies, a description of the geologic setting and the rock units, and a review of existing coalbed methane fields. It then gives the results of Phase I of the study (an evaluation of all potential coalbed methane sources in Pennsylvanian strata, with an emphasis on the Pittsburgh coal), summarizes the coalbed methane potential, and gives the results of Phase II (evaluation of the Allegheny Formation coals and associated reservoir-quality sandstones). The report is wrapped up with a section of summary and conclusions. The text includes numerous maps, cross sections, and tabular data to support the discussion. |
