Description
Adams County is mostly in the Gettysburg basin, but its western and northwestern extent is in the South Mountain section of the Ridge and Valley province, and its southeastern portion is in the Piedmont Upland and Lowland sections of the Piedmont province. (Physiographic terminology in the report is of 1932 vintage.) Rocks include Precambrian schist and phyllite in the Piedmont Upland and metavolcanics in South Mountain, Cambrian carbonates in the western tip of the Conestoga Valley (Piedmont Lowland), and Triassic sedimentary rocks and diabase in the Gettysburg basin. The report includes detailed stratigraphy, a description of structure at map scale, a narrative of geologic history, and a detailed discussion of mineral resources. The sections on individual mineral resources include specific sources (mines, quarries) and uses (including photographs of buildings and other structures), and in some cases, analyses and details of processing. An unusual feature of this report is its emphasis on cultural history—there is a copy of Lincoln's Gettysburg Address, and many photographs of the Gettysburg battlefield are used as illustrations. The report has plates showing a 1:62,500-scale topographic map and a 1:125,000-scale geologic map with cross sections.
