Description
This educational booklet starts with an excellent overview of glaciers—how they form, the different types, their movement, and how they shape the landscape through erosion and depositional processes. Illustrations assist the reader with the associated glacial terminology. The second half of the booklet focuses on the Ice Age—how it developed, the study of glacial stratigraphy to decipher past glaciations, glaciations in Pennsylvania (Illinoian and Wisconsinan), the periglacial phenomena (or how adjacent, nonglaciated areas were affected by the cold climate), life (plant and animal) during the Ice Age, and the important effect glaciers had on our water resources (including the formation of the Great Lakes). A centerfold map of Pennsylvania shows the extent of various glacial deposits and the approximate southern limit of the ice advances.
