Description
This publication is a description of the 185-mile-long late Wisconsinan (Woodfordian) glacial boundary from Shinglehouse, on the New York state line in McKean County, to the Delaware River in Northampton County. The report provides the following information on the glacial-border zone: (1) the distribution of till as ground moraine and end moraine, (2) brief descriptions of the various materials; (3) locations of various glacial features, (4) the continuity of the border across north-central and northeastern Pennsylvania, and (5) radiocarbon age determinations and consequent correlations which demonstrate the contemporaneity of the border deposits throughout the mapped area and their Woodfordian age. The economic significance of the deposits for sand, gravel, peat, clay, and fill is also explored, as are the environmental characteristics of the deposits and their relationship to groundwater. The report text includes detailed descriptions of 14 locations. The glacial-border deposits were mapped at 1:24,000 scale, and Plate 1 in the report is a 1:100,000-scale compilation of those maps.
