Description:Detailed field guidebook on the geology of the Horse Shoe Curve of the Norfolk Southern Railway’s Pittsburgh Line (formerly the main line of the Pennsylvania Railroad) in Logan Township, Blair County, west of Altoona, where a series of cuts expose some of the most complete sections of late Paleozoic strata in central Pennsylvania. The report contains 16 stop descriptions of measured sections and related commentary for the principal railroad cuts. Beginning at Tunnel Hill, near Gallitzin, in the northeastern part of the Ebensburg 15-minute quadrangle (Cresson 7.5-minute quadrangle), the series of sections extends eastward along the railroad right-of-way for a distance of more than 8.5 miles. They cover approximately 7,000 feet of stratigraphic interval—commencing at the base of the Pennsylvanian Glenshaw Formation (Conemaugh Group) and continuing to near the base of the Upper Devonian Scherr Formation (formerly lower Chemung Shale).
