Description
A study of the paleontology of the Devonian Mahantango Formation of the Hamilton Group from sample sites in the Ridge and Valley province in Snyder, Juniata, Perry, Mifflin, Huntingdon, Blair, Bedford, and Fulton Counties. Prior to this report, the paleontology of this stratigraphic unit had been studied extensively in New York, but not in south-central Pennsylvania—partly because of poorer preservation and partly because the fauna were assumed to be identical to those in New York. This study was carried out to better define the paleontology in south-central Pennsylvania and also to better understand the stratigraphic relationships of units within the Mahantango Formation and between the Mahantango and contiguous formations. Following a discussion of the stratigraphy of the formation, detailed information on the systematic paleontology is presented. Comprehensive descriptions of measured sections are presented as an appendix. Three large plates showing stratigraphic relationships of the Mahantango are included. Sixteen additional plates consist of numerous photographs of fossils.
