Description:This report discusses the geology and mineral resources of an area of approximately 170 square miles—all of the Greencastle and Waynesboro 7.5-minute quadrangles and part of the adjoining quadrangles to the south and west. Rocks include the Precambrian Catoctin Formation of South Mountain and Cambrian and Ordovician sandstones, carbonates, and shales of South Mountain and the Great Valley. The Martinsburg Formation is seen in the western part of the map area. Economic mineral analysis primarily deals with the carbonates. Two plates are included as follows: (1) a 1:24,000-scale bedrock geologic map and (2) two cross sections whose locations are indicated on the geologic map.
