Description
This report defines the hydrogeology and water resources in Greene County and evaluates the impact of surface and subsurface coal mining on the hydrologic environment. The text contains a description of the geologic units and their aquifer characteristics; the occurrence, movement, and chemical quality of groundwater and surface water; and the hydrologic effects of coal mining. A groundwater-flow model is used to predict the effects of subsurface mining. Tabulated data complement the text discussion. A 1:50,000-scale geologic map of the county is included with the report. Geologic structure is shown by structure contours on the base of the Pittsburgh coal and by a cross section. Locations of wells, springs, and sample sites are indicated on the map. The map explanation describes the geologic units and their hydrologic properties. A second plate has a 1:50,000-scale map showing seepage measurements in the Whiteley Creek basin.
